Glamorgan & Balconiers combined Annual Awards Dinner 3rd October 2022 including a tribute to Eifion Jones.

Glamorgan CCC teamed up with the St. Helen’s Balconiers who hosted a combined Annual Awards Dinner at the Towers Hotel, Jersey Marine on Monday, 3rd October 2022. For the Balconiers this is the 49th occasion of this end of season celebration.

The Balconiers, who are also celebrating their 50th Anniversary having been formed in August 1972 also included a tribute to Eifion Jones who had recently celebrated his 80th birthday.

The evening was compered by Dr Andrew Hignell, Edward Bevan and John Williams (Balconiers Chairman) with each providing some generous humour as the attendees took dinner with interludes for some short speeches, presentations and responses from both Glamorgan CCC and the Balconiers.

Mark Wallace (Glamorgan CCC Director of Cricket) gave a summary of the season’s achievements noting how good it was for the players to be out of the Covid bubbles of 2020 & 2021 back playing in front of supporters.

The Glamorgan Awards were presented as follows: Academy Player of the Year – Callum Nicholls (St. Fagans CC); the Wales U18 Team were recognised for their successful season; 2nd XI Player of the Year and the John Derrick Young Player of the Year Award both went to Tom Bevan. The final three awards presented by Matthew Maynard all went to Sam Northeast on his debut season with the Club.

There was one final duty for Mark Wallace on the evening that being, to ask Michael Hogan to join him and to receive a ceremonial cap in recognition of being inducted into the Glamorgan “Hall of Fame”. Michael joined Glamorgan in 2012, making 273 appearances across all formats, taking 654 wickets and is the Club’s top wicket-taker in T20 cricket with 114. He is the 35th person to be rewarded with this accolade.

Next Deputy Chair of Glamorgan CCC Ann-Marie Smale MBE spoke briefly on behalf of the Senior Management Team at Glamorgan CCC.

There followed a tribute to Eifion Jones presented by Edward Bevan including a video compiled by Paul Sussex which highlighted the contribution and versatility of Eifion over the 22 years he was with Glamorgan. Reference was also made to a booklet titled “Eifion – In Other Words” that had been created Richard Bentley specifically to commemorate Eifion’s 80th birthday. Following the video Eifion took to the floor to recount a few anecdotes of his playing days.

Next it was time for the St. Helen’s Balconiers Awards presented by Alan Jones MBE (President of the St. Helen’s Balconiers) and John Williams which came in two categories, Milestone Awards and Merit Awards.

There were 7 Milestone Awards:

David Lloyd Glamorgan CCC Captain in scoring 313* v Derbyshire CCC at Cardiff, becoming the 2nd highest individual scorer in the Clubs history and the highest score by Welsh born player ever.

Welsh spinner Sophia Smale in recognition of her contribution to the Oval Invincibles in winning the Women’s Hundred at Lord’s in August 2022.

Sam Northeast, scoring 410* the highest individual score by a Glamorgan CCC batter in the County Championship in July 2022 at Grace Road v Leicestershire CCC.

Colin Ingram for his contribution in two triple century partnerships v Sussex CCC and Leicestershire CCC. The first time this has been achieved in first-class cricket.

Edward Byrom for his part in the 328 run partnership with Colin Ingram v Sussex CCC in June 2022, it included his first century (176) for Glamorgan a career best.

Sam Northeast and Chris Cooke for their record all time any wicket partnership for Glamorgan CCC 461* v Leicestershire CCC at Grace Road, July 2022.

There were 4 Merit Awards presented:

2nd XI Player of the Year: Tom Bevan

Gerry Munday Award for the most improved young, uncapped player: Callum Taylor

David Evans Memorial Award – this is a special award in grateful appreciation and recognition of a player’s unstinting and wholehearted commitment during a career at Glamorgan – Michael Hogan. Michael gave a brief reflection on his time with Glamorgan.

The Balconiers Player of Year Award – Sam Northeast.

There were some observations by Glamorgan President Gerard Elias CBE QC regarding the England & Wales Cricket Board’s High-Performance Review and calling for ‘as much four-day cricket as possible’. The evening concluded with a standing ovation in recognition of John Williams and his work and commitment to arranging the evening on behalf of the St. Helen’s Balconiers.
